The beginnings 1886–1905
The young Robert Bosch did all the precision-mechanical and electrical-engineering work that came his way in order to keep his business running. For the most part, this involved installing low-voltage equipment such as telephone terminals, electric bells, door openers, remote electrical water-level indicators, and later pneumatic tube pipelines and electric lighting.
Yet despite this extensive portfolio, orders were often sparse during the early years, leaving Bosch struggling to keep his workforce busy and pay their wages. Still, he wanted to do the best he could by them. Sometimes on Friday afternoon, he had to ask a neighboring wealthy shop owner for money tio pay his workers. In addition, he needed more capital to invest in modern equipment for his workshop.

They were well made and had many similarities to products made in the German werks in Stuttgart. Craftsmanship was a bit more utilitarian in appearance. Here is a postcard showing the modern and spacious Bosch magneto Company in Springfield, Mass before WW1, probably or Note the early company logo. The site of the factory resembled a college campus. Each employee had their own name badge that was signed, dated and embossed and specified when the associate was allowed in a building and which department and building they were permitted to enter.
In addition to the signature, the card is embossed with the early company logo. They cared about their employees and their organization. We hope Mr Saner is enjoying his retirement. Obviously not much has changed in the service department relative to clients requesting repair estimates. Repair estimates are typically a moving target and the only way to be sure what is needed to make a device good again is to make it good again, that is, performing to factory specs.

Thanks to Craig Lewis of Parksville, B. Featured on this page is an example of an original non-script slant pole ignition coil. On other smaller distributor parts such as points and plates, the American Bosch logo was a helmeted racing driver’s face overlaid on a stylized round ‘AB’. Standard Products ‘SP’ was another supplier for some production quantities.
The wire terminals on this coil point outward, away from the nipple, giving rise to the commonly used ‘slant pole’ description. The coil has a steel rain cap crimped over the top of the rolled can seam, as found on all original Model A coils. The coil bracket is spot welded to the can on all original Model A coils. The lockform seam faces the firewall and is not visible when installed on the car.
The lower nipple end cap joint is soldered to the can.

But there was, of course, the chance of a mine or bullet flying between the two points of impact, even though the gun had no sight. It was also very inaccurate and, because of its unusual form, the soldiers could hardly be expected to use it effectively. But for medium combat close enough to cover an entire sector it could be very useful. The gun would kill a few of the enemy but not be a major threat. This was at least as much to do with the war-weariness of the Germans as what the Mauser was.
It looks like a machine gun but it is more similar to an automatic rifle than a standard rifle. I know of no other military firearm of this type which looks so much like an automatic than the Mauser Browning.
